Acting Up Theatre School was established in 2001 and provides quality Performing Arts education in Gateshead and Newcastle that is complementary to, yet independent of school studies. Whilst we are aware that some pupils will wish to pursue a career in Performing Arts in which we support and encourage, our primary concern is to harvest the potential of every child. Our success is evidenced by the significant improvement in confidence, articulation, poise, creativity and communication that Acting Up pupils typically display.
Training is offered to children and young adults from 2 to 18 years. Pupils can begin Acting Up in our Pre-School classes that cater for the needs of children 2-4 years and take place over a 2-hour period. During this time pupils get a little taster of dance, drama and music. When pupils reach the age of 5 they then move into our main school and study dance, drama and music as separate disciplines and attend over a 3-hour period. Drama focuses on developing confidence and a wide variety of dramatic techniques. Dance lessons cover a varied syllabus that includes ballet, tap, jazz, modern and street dance. Singing lessons focus on developing pupils vocal range and cover a variety of different styles of music.
Acting Up pupils are also given the opportunity to take Speech and Drama examinations with L.A.M.D.A and Guildhall of Music and Drama. No formal training is required to join Acting Up just an interest and enthusiasm in performing.
Our casting agency provides our pupils with opportunities to work professionally in either TV, Radio or Theatre. Many of our pupils have continued their vocational studies at full-time performing arts colleges that have included; The London Studio Centre, LABAN Contemporary Dance School (London),The Royal Academy of Drama, Line Theatre Arts, London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Bird College, The Birmingham School of Acting and The Sage Academy Newcastle.
Our experienced teachers recognise that all pupils are unique individuals and all learn in different ways, at different paces and to different levels. This has been recognised by Ofsted where teaching staff have been awarded Outstanding for exemplary teaching practice.
We believe the skills gained from the Performing Arts offer much more than just an opportunity to perform. They are assets that will enable your child to grow as an individual and that will stay with them for a life time. They can refine abilities like discipline, communication and teamwork, whilst increasing self-confidence self-esteem and creativity. At Acting Up, we are organised like a family and we perform as a team. We are bonded together with the same aim – to have fun while exploring the creative process.
